Custom Shopify App vs App Store Apps: When Should You Build Your Own?

DDevjour Technologies

The Shopify App Store is one of the platform's superpowers: 8,000+ apps, most problems one install away. So why do growing stores keep hiring developers to build custom apps anyway?

Because somewhere between app number four and app number ten, the economics quietly flip. This post is the honest decision framework: when off-the-shelf wins, when custom wins, and how to tell which side you are on.

When App Store apps are the right call

Installed apps win when your need is common and your workflow is standard. Reviews, email capture, loyalty points, basic bundles: these are solved problems, and the leading apps solve them well for $10 to $50 a month. Install, configure, move on.

App Store apps also win when you want to test an idea. Not sure subscriptions fit your product? Try a subscription app for three months before commissioning anything.

The hidden costs that flip the math

1. Stacking fees

Six apps at an average of $40 a month is $2,880 a year, every year. Over three years that is more than most custom app builds, and you still do not own anything.

2. The 70% problem

Each app does most of what you need. The missing 30% gets patched with workarounds, manual steps and staff time. You are paying for the app AND the gap it leaves.

3. Speed weight

Every app injects scripts. Stores with 15+ apps routinely lose seconds of load time, and slow stores convert worse. Uninstalling rarely removes everything either; leftover code lingers in themes.

4. Apps talking past each other

Your bundle app does not know about your subscription app. Your loyalty app double-counts discounted orders. Duct tape between apps is where operations time disappears.

When custom wins

Custom Shopify app development makes sense in four situations:

  • The app does not exist. Your workflow is specific to your business: a trade customer approval flow, a production queue, a weird-but-profitable pricing rule. We built a client a 36-item team bundle builder because nothing on the App Store understood mixed-size team orders.
  • You are paying several apps to approximate one workflow. One custom app that does exactly your flow replaces the stack and the monthly bills.
  • The feature IS your business. Configurators and personalizers, like the sticker builder in our Jetpack case study, are not add-ons. They are the product experience, and owning them outright matters.
  • Operational integration. Syncing Shopify with your ERP, 3PL or accounting system reliably is custom territory, closer to systems integration than to any installable app.

The numbers, honestly

A focused private app typically costs a one-time $2,000 to $8,000 depending on complexity, plus modest maintenance. Compare that to your relevant app subscriptions over 24 months, add the staff hours your workarounds burn, and the answer usually becomes obvious in either direction.

Be suspicious of anyone who says custom is always better. For standard needs, it is not. It is slower to ship and you carry maintenance. The win only exists where your needs genuinely diverge from the average store.

A sensible migration path

Most clients do not rip out their stack overnight. The pattern that works: build custom for the one workflow with the worst 70% problem, prove the value, then consolidate gradually. Each replacement pays for the next.

FAQ

Who owns a custom app?

You do: the code, the app listing in your Partner account, everything. No vendor can raise prices on you or shut down.

What happens when Shopify updates its API?

APIs version roughly quarterly with long deprecation windows. A maintenance plan (ours covers this) keeps apps current. Unmaintained apps eventually break, which is also true of abandoned App Store apps.

Can you take over an app another developer built?

Yes, we audit and take over existing apps regularly. Bring the code; we will tell you what state it is in for free.

How long does a custom app take?

Small private apps: 2 to 4 weeks. Embedded admin tools and integrations: 4 to 8 weeks. You get a fixed timeline with the quote.
