Shopify Email vs Klaviyo vs Omnisend: Choosing an Email Platform for Your Store
Picking an email platform feels like a small decision until you try to leave one. Your subscriber list, consent records, automations, templates and a year of reporting all live inside it. For most Shopify merchants the shortlist comes down to three names: Shopify Email, Klaviyo and Omnisend. Each is a sensible choice for a different kind of store, and the wrong fit usually shows up as either paying for features you never use or hitting a ceiling right when email starts to matter.
This comparison looks at how Shopify Email vs Klaviyo vs Omnisend differ on segmentation, automation, SMS, deliverability, reporting, pricing and switching costs. Pricing and features change often, so treat the numbers here as ranges and check each vendor's current pricing page.
The Short Version
- Shopify Email suits newer or smaller stores that want simple newsletters and basic automations inside the Shopify admin, at very low cost.
- Klaviyo suits stores where email and SMS are a major revenue channel and someone on the team (or an agency) will actively build segments, test and analyze.
- Omnisend sits in the middle: more automation and built-in SMS than Shopify Email, simpler and usually cheaper than Klaviyo at the same list size.
Shopify Email vs Klaviyo vs Omnisend: How Each Platform Works
Shopify Email
Shopify Email is Shopify's own app, managed from the Marketing section of the admin. You design emails with a drag-and-drop editor that pulls products, prices and images straight from your store. Automations (Shopify calls them marketing automations) are built on Shopify's workflow tooling, with templates for welcome series, browse and cart follow-ups and post-purchase messages.
Its biggest strength is that there's nothing to integrate. Customer data, orders and products are already there. Its limitation is depth: segmentation and automation logic are more basic, and advanced reporting is thin compared to dedicated platforms. At the time of writing, Shopify Email includes a free monthly sending allowance (historically 10,000 emails per month) with a low per-email charge above that. Check the current terms in the Shopify App Store listing.
Klaviyo
Klaviyo is a customer data and marketing platform with deep Shopify integration. It syncs orders, products, browsing events and customer properties, and lets you segment on almost any combination of them. It supports email, SMS and, depending on your plan and region, other channels.
Its strengths are segmentation, flow logic, predictive fields (such as expected next order date and predicted lifetime value, which need enough order history to be meaningful), and reporting. The trade-off is cost and complexity. It rewards teams who will actually use the power, and it can feel heavy for a store sending one newsletter a month.
Omnisend
Omnisend is built specifically for ecommerce and covers email, SMS and web push notifications in one platform. It has pre-built automation workflows, a product picker in its editor, and segmentation based on shopping behavior. Its pitch is getting most of what a growing store needs without a steep learning curve.
It's typically less granular than Klaviyo on segmentation and data, and its ecosystem of integrations and agency expertise is smaller. For many stores between early traction and mid-size, it covers the needs comfortably.
Segmentation
Segmentation is where the three separate most clearly.
- Shopify Email uses Shopify's customer segments. These are genuinely useful: you can filter by order count, amount spent, location, tags, products purchased and more using Shopify's segment editor. For many small stores this is enough.
- Omnisend adds behavioral segments based on email engagement, site activity and purchase history, with a friendly builder. You can build "bought twice, not in 90 days, opened an email recently" without much effort.
- Klaviyo goes furthest. You can combine event-based conditions (viewed a product in a category, clicked a certain link), profile properties, predictive fields and custom data synced from other systems such as a loyalty app, subscription platform or helpdesk.
If nobody on your team will build and maintain more than five or six segments, Klaviyo's advantage is mostly theoretical.
Automation and Flows
All three handle the standard flows: welcome series, abandoned browse and cart, post-purchase, win-back. (Cart recovery specifics deserve their own discussion, so we'll leave that aside here.)
Where they differ:
- Branching logic. Klaviyo and Omnisend both support conditional splits (for example, "has ordered before" versus "first-time visitor") and delays. Klaviyo's flows allow more complex branching, trigger filters and data-driven conditions.
- Triggers. Klaviyo can trigger flows from almost any event it receives, including custom events sent from your own systems. That matters if you want flows triggered by, say, a warranty registration or a subscription pause. Omnisend supports a solid set of ecommerce triggers plus custom events via its API. Shopify Email automations rely on the triggers available in Shopify's automation tooling.
- Multichannel steps. Omnisend and Klaviyo let you mix email and SMS steps in the same flow. With Shopify Email, SMS would require a separate app.
If you're connecting email to other tools, such as a subscription app, loyalty program, reviews platform or ERP, integration quality becomes a deciding factor. Our Shopify integrations team often sees the platform choice decided by which one connects cleanly to the rest of the stack.
SMS
SMS is increasingly bundled into these decisions.
- Shopify Email is email only. You'd pair it with a separate SMS app.
- Omnisend includes SMS in its platform, and its plans have historically included some SMS credits, with more available to purchase.
- Klaviyo offers SMS alongside email, billed separately based on message volume and destination country.
SMS costs vary widely by country and message length, so model it on your own list. Also remember that SMS consent is separate from email consent and carries stricter legal requirements in many markets (for example, TCPA rules in the US). Any platform you choose should record consent source and timestamp for both channels.
Deliverability
Deliverability, meaning whether your emails reach the inbox, depends more on your practices than on the platform. Still, the platform affects it in a few ways.
- Domain authentication. Since Google and Yahoo tightened bulk sender requirements in 2024, authenticating your sending domain with SPF, DKIM and DMARC is effectively mandatory. All three platforms support sending from your own domain; make sure it's set up rather than relying on a shared default.
- Shared infrastructure. Smaller senders typically share sending infrastructure with other customers. Reputable platforms police abusive senders, which helps everyone on the pool.
- List hygiene tools. Klaviyo and Omnisend give you engagement-based segments that make it easy to send only to people who've opened or clicked recently, and to sunset inactive subscribers. This is one of the most effective deliverability habits, and it's harder to do well with more basic tooling.
Reporting and Attribution
Every platform reports opens, clicks and attributed revenue. Be careful with that last number. Each platform uses an attribution window (for example, orders within a few days of an email click or open) and counts revenue that may also be claimed by your ads, organic search or direct traffic. Opens have been unreliable as a metric since Apple's Mail Privacy Protection, so focus on clicks, conversions and revenue per recipient.
- Shopify Email reporting shows campaign performance and sales, and it lives inside Shopify Analytics.
- Omnisend gives clear campaign and automation reports with sales attribution, adequate for most growing stores.
- Klaviyo provides deeper analysis: custom reports, cohort views, benchmarks against similar companies, and flow-level performance breakdowns.
Whichever you pick, compare attributed revenue with your overall Shopify sales trend. If attributed revenue climbs but total revenue doesn't, the platform is taking credit rather than creating sales.
Klaviyo vs Omnisend vs Shopify Email Pricing by List Size
Here's where the math matters. All three have changed pricing structures in recent years, so use these as rough, relative guidance rather than quotes:
| List size | Shopify Email | Omnisend | Klaviyo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 1,000 | Free or near free | Free plan or low monthly fee | Free tier or low monthly fee |
| 5,000 | Typically under $20/month at moderate send volume | Roughly $20 to $80/month | Roughly $60 to $150/month |
| 25,000 | Roughly $20 to $100/month depending on sends | Roughly $150 to $400/month | Roughly $300 to $700/month |
| 100,000 | Scales with emails sent | Several hundred to $1,000+/month | $1,000 to $2,000+/month |
A few things drive the real bill:
- What's being counted. Shopify Email charges by emails sent. Klaviyo and Omnisend price mainly by contacts or profiles (check whether they count all contacts or only active or subscribed ones), with send limits by plan.
- SMS on top. SMS can easily exceed the email bill for stores that use it heavily.
- Unsubscribed and inactive contacts. Suppressing or removing people who haven't engaged in 6 to 12 months lowers cost on contact-based plans and improves deliverability.
A useful sanity check: your email platform cost should be a small fraction of the revenue it demonstrably drives. If email is a large share of your sales, paying more for better tooling usually pays for itself. If email is a minor channel, the free or cheap options are the rational choice.
Switching Costs
Moving between platforms is doable, but it's rarely a weekend job. Budget for:
- Exporting and importing profiles with consent status, consent timestamps and source. Losing consent records is the most serious risk in any migration.
- Rebuilding flows. Automations don't transfer between platforms. Each one must be rebuilt and retested.
- Recreating templates. Brand templates can be approximated quickly, but complex dynamic blocks take time.
- Recreating segments using the new platform's logic, which never maps perfectly.
- Domain warm-up. Some senders see a short dip in inbox placement after switching, so ramp volume up gradually, starting with your most engaged subscribers.
- Updating signup forms and integrations such as popups, checkout consent, loyalty and reviews apps that push data to the email tool.
- Losing historical reporting. Campaign history usually stays behind. Export key reports before closing the old account.
In our projects, a migration for a store with a handful of flows typically takes 1 to 3 weeks and costs somewhere between $1,500 and $6,000 in setup work. Stores with dozens of flows, multiple languages or custom integrations sit above that. Running both platforms in parallel for a few weeks avoids gaps.
How to Choose Between Shopify Email, Klaviyo and Omnisend
Ask these questions in order:
- How much revenue does email drive today, and how much do you want it to drive? Under a few percent of sales, start with Shopify Email. Growing channel, consider Omnisend. Core channel, Klaviyo is usually worth its cost.
- Who will run it? A founder with two hours a month needs simplicity. A retention marketer or agency will use Klaviyo's depth.
- Do you need SMS now? If yes, Omnisend or Klaviyo keep everything in one place.
- What else needs to connect? List your subscription, loyalty, reviews and support tools, then check each platform's integration with them.
- What will it cost at two to three times your current list size? Choose with growth in mind to avoid a forced migration later.

FAQ
Can I start on Shopify Email and move to Klaviyo later?
Yes, and many stores do. Keep your consent data clean in Shopify from day one, and document the automations you build so they're easy to recreate. The migration mainly costs time spent rebuilding flows and templates.
Is Klaviyo worth it for a small store?
Sometimes. If you have a few thousand engaged subscribers and a clear plan for segmented campaigns and flows, Klaviyo's tools can pay off early. If you'll send a monthly newsletter and a welcome email, a simpler and cheaper platform is a better fit.
Does the email platform affect deliverability?
Somewhat, but your own practices matter far more. Authenticate your domain, send to engaged subscribers, remove inactive ones and avoid purchased lists. Those habits drive inbox placement on every platform.
Can I use one platform for email and another for SMS?
You can, but you'll need to keep consent and suppression lists in sync and avoid sending both channels to the same person at the same moment. Using one platform for both is simpler for most stores.
